So here they are: the most beautiful of all Star Trek uniforms (in my opinion, that is). The Monster Maroons!
For this new uniform, everything from the past was completely thrown out. Jackets were introduced that evoked the nautical tradition on which the Starship Enterprise's crew was structured. While all coats were maroon, colored accessories were added to show the wearer's department.
White stood for Command and was only worn by those with the rank of Captain or above. Gray became the color for Science, while a Yellow Ochre represented Engineering. A Moss Green was worn by Medical personnel. Security became a Dark Green, Special Services wore Sky Blue, and for trainee cadets, Scarlet Red was used. The shirt color was repeated on a shoulder and wrist strap that also included a pin indicating the wearers rank. It also appeared on a stripe on the uniform trousers. The jackets were finished with black edging and a black leather belt with metal buckle featuring a Starfleet emblem.
To give the jackets a traditional look, a wool elastiqe material was used. The sleeves featured stitched rings while a double-breasted flap unsnapped to reveal an interior colored lining – white for Command and tan for all other ranks. The interior had a full black lining with some quilted areas. It's not known exactly how many maroon uniforms were made, but it is a certaintly that the jackets that were first created for Star Trek II were continually reused throughout the decade of the TOS movie era. Probably because of their cost and complexity, new jackets were only created as needed, like when cast members put on too much weight between productions and could not fit into their old wardrobe.
The undershirts were made of a light synthetic material and featured ribbed turtleneck collars and wrists. While the shirts were designed to be long-sleeved, sleeveless versions were also created due to the costumes being so hot
to wear under the intense set lights. In a number of scenes you can clearly see the undershirts peeking out at the wrists (like they should) while disappearing completely in others.
To go along with the jackets, black trousers were made in two basic styles: hero wool pants (worn by the main cast and principle actors) and stunt or background cotton pants (worn by everyone else). The trousers were made extra long so that they could be "balooned" over the boot tops. The entire uniform was then finished off with black leather boots. At least some cast members wore Swiss Bally boots.
